Are you suffering from lack of sleep?
Sleep deprivation is a serious problem and with more and more people in the city complaining of insomnia, it seems you’re not alone. Lack of sleep has been linked to various diseases including obesity and heart disease.
Developing and maintaining a fixed sleeping pattern can help. Late nights over the weekend followed by sleeping in extra the next morning, can throw off your clock. Sleeping in till late on Sundays will just end up making you feel like a total zombie on Monday morning. Don’t snooze for more than an hour longer than usual. If you find it hard to stay awake, take a catnap.
Another common complaint for those who are unable to get a good night’s sleep is that they have a snoring partner. Volumes can reach 90 decibels and wake you up during your most restful phase of sleep. Get your partner to sleep on his/her side instead of the back or go to a doctor and get the problem checked.
Believe it or not, but a messy bedroom can reduce your sleep. If there’s a pile of stuff on your desk or floor, the cluttered environment will make for a cluttered mind. Stress is the number one reason of sleep problems. Spend a few minutes sorting out your mess. Also keep your computer or laptop in another room.
One of the pre-requisites for getting a good night’s sleep is ensuring your bedroom is completely dark. Light from street lamps, alarm clocks, computers etc could be keeping you awake. Studies suggest that a small amount of light is strong enough to enter your retina when your eyes are closed and will signal your brain to wake up. Draw your curtains if needed. Similarly, certain people are more sensitive to sounds and can be kept awake by traffic noises, loud neighbours, television sounds etc. Try shifting your bed to the quietest room in the house and see if it helps.
